POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Think Tank is seeking an experienced Technical Editor to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This role is central to ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and accessibility of scientific publications and communications that inform the conservation and management of marine ecosystems.

The Technical Editor will work closely with scientists, managers, and communications staff to prepare official reports, maintain publication tracking systems, and ensure compliance with accessibility standards. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact research that will provide public affairs support.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Scientific/Technical Editing: Edit, format, and prepare technical reports (Technical Memoranda, Processed Reports, Data Reports, Contract Reports, White Papers) for publication in NOAA's Institutional Repository.

  • Publication Tracking: Administer and support the Research Publication Tracking System (RPTS), produce quarterly compliance reports, and assist NOAA staff with policy guidance.

  • Editorial Support: Provide editing and formatting for scientific and technical documents outside the report series, ensuring adherence to NOAA and NEFSC style guides.

  • Science Communication: Write and copyedit science outreach and education content for web and social media; support content curation and management of the NEFSC website and intranet.

  • Accessibility Compliance: Ensure all publications meet Section 508 accessibility standards ; provide training and serve as an authority on accessibility requirements.

  • Collaboration: Participate in NOAA RPTS User Group and Publications Group meetings to remain current with evolving practices.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Advanced degree in English, Technical Writing/Editing, Communications, or a related field

  • Minimum of 5 years' professional experience editing and publishing peer-reviewed scientific documentation in marine biology and/or fishery science .

  • Knowledge of fisheries, marine mammal science, oceanography, economics, or statistics.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Suite (InDesign, Acrobat Pro, Photoshop), Google Suite , and Microsoft Office .

  • Demonstrated experience making documents Section 508-compliant and training others on accessibility best practices.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines.

  • Ability to interpret and edit technical material for diverse audiences
