What you will do: The Battery Systems Engineer is responsible for defining, developing, and integrating Li-Ion and/or ultra-capacitor battery systems that meet OEM and regulatory requirements for low-voltage (12V-48V) automotive applications. This role involves requirements engineering, system integration, functional safety, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver safe, reliable, and high-performance energy storage solutions. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong background in battery technology, automotive systems engineering, and compliance with industry standards (ASPICE, ISO 26262, ISO 15288, INCOSE SE Handbook). How you will do it: System Requirements Engineering: Capture, analyze, and refine system-level requirements from OEMs, product management, and internal teams. Allocate performance and other limiting requirements to all functional levels. Ensure traceability between system requirements, architecture, and validation plans using a requirements management tool. Balance competing requirements across multiple customers and regulatory frameworks. System Architecture & Design: Define system architectures, including cell selection, thermal, electrical, and mechanical interfaces. Develop detailed block diagrams, interface definitions, and system-level schematics. Allocate functional and non-functional requirements to subsystems and components. Manage trade-offs between safety, performance, cost, and scalability. Integrate design work from engineering disciplines Functional Safety & Compliance: Implement according to the Clarios Functional Safety Process (consistent with ISO 26262) throughout the development lifecycle. Conduct safety analyses such as HARA, FTA, FMEA, and Common-Mode Analysis. Ownership of the system level DFMEA and coordinating the connections with other sub-systems and component FMEAs. Define safety goals, technical safety concepts, and validation strategies. System Integration & Interfaces: Define and manage thermal, electrical, and mechanical interfaces between the battery pack, BMS, and vehicle powertrain. Work closely with software, mechanical, and electrical teams to optimize system-level interactions. Support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) and Model-in-the-Loop (MiL) testing to validate system integration. System Integration & Verification: Define electrical, thermal, and mechanical interfaces between the battery pack, ultra-capacitor system, BMS, and vehicle powertrain. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless system integration and interface compatibility. Lead the development of Design Verification Plans (DVPs), ensuring comprehensive validation coverage for system performance, durability, and compliance with OEM and regulatory standards. Document verification coverage of all requirements with traceability in the requirements management tool. Participate in system-level validation, durability testing, and failure mode analysis. Support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), and system-level validation to ensure robust performance. Assist in aging studies, thermal modeling, and electrical load analysis for predictive performance assessments. Design for Manufacturability (DFM) & Release: Ensure system and component designs are optimized for manufacturing, assembly, and scalability. Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams to refine designs for production feasibility. Support Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), contributing to control plan development and DFMEA execution. Release the battery system design to production, ensuring alignment with assembly plant and supplier requirements. Risk Management & Documentation: Own system-level DFMEA, ensuring proper alignment with subsystem and component-level DFMEAs. Ensure alignment with ASPICE 3.1, ISO 15288, and INCOSE Systems Engineering best practices. Cross-functional Collaboration & Leadership: Act as a technical liaison between systems, mechanical, electrical, thermal, and software engineering teams. Manage engineering documentation to ensure a sensible archive of information including engineering calculations, engineering drawings, intellectual property, DFMEAs, validation reports, meeting minutes, trip reports, and customer documents/communication. Provide technical guidance to designers, engineers, and suppliers. What we look for: BS/MS in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience). 5+ years of experience in automotive battery systems, powertrain, or electrification projects. Experience with ISO 26262 Functional Safety, ASPICE, and INCOSE Systems Engineering methodologies. Proficiency in requirements management tools (Jama, DOORS), simulation tools (MATLAB, Simulink), and validation frameworks. OEM/Tier 1 experience in automotive battery systems is preferred.
