RN Nurse Trainee - Forensic Health - As Needed

Work location: Travel across entities as needed

Work hours: PRN - as needed

Here's What You Need

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing required and

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred

  • Forensic Nurse training - Completed 40-hour adult/adolescent and 40-hour pediatric didactic SANE class meeting the minimum Texas Office of the Attorney General's SANE education requirements.

  • 2 years as a clinical nurse required

  • RN upon hire required and

  • BCLS - prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly required

  • CA-SANE - adult/adolescent SANE certification through the Texas office of the Attorney General within 12 months of hire required

What You Will Do

The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) Trainee job position provides educational and clinical requirements needed to provide competent, trauma informed medical forensic assessments, documentation, and evidence collection to individuals with the complaint of interpersonal violence, to include but not limited to, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, family violence, human trafficking, elder abuse, and workplace violence. FNE Trainees will be provided with the educational and clinical requirements for Pediatric and Adult/Adolescent SANE Certification through the Texas Office of the Attorney General, strangulation assessment and documentation education, and specialized assaultive violence assessment and documentation education.

Educational and clinical requirements related to strangulation, assaultive violence, and Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric SANE certification must be completed within 1 year of hiring as per the Forensic Nurse Examiner Training Agreement. After conclusion of these training requirements and Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric SANE certification from the Texas Office of the Attorney General is achieved, the FNE Trainee position will transfer to a FNE PRN I or FNE PRN II position. Once the FNE Trainee position transfers to a FNE PRN position, the employee must adhere to the Forensic Nurse Training Agreement, or they will be in default and be required to reimburse THR for any and all educational expenses.

Travel required - Texas Health SANE Program responds to the following wholly owned entities in two divisions:

NE: Texas Health Dallas (primary hub), Texas Health Denton, and Texas Health Kaufman.

SW: Texas Health Fort Worth (primary hub), Texas Health Alliance, Texas Health Arlington Memorial, Texas Health Azle, Texas Health Cleburne, Texas Health HEB, Texas Health Southwest, and Texas Health Stephenville.

  • Under guidance of an appointed Forensic Healthcare & Violence Intervention Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) Preceptor learn to:

? Provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to patients with a complaint of interpersonal violence by utilizing the nursing process to identify and prioritize needs.

? Assess patient's psychological and social needs and makes appropriate referrals, collaborates closely with rape crisis center hospital accompaniment advocate and/or other community advocacy agencies to assure patient's needs are met.

? Demonstrate ability to identify needs of patients with a complaint of interpersonal violence that would require physician intervention in a timely manner.

? Perform a complete medical forensic examination including obtaining a medical history for the purpose of treatment, detailed head-to-toe assessment for trauma to include all body orifices if applicable, forensic specimen collection as indicated by history or examination findings, and detailed documentation to possibly include photo documentation.

? Maintain chain of custody for each exam and adhere to best practices and evidence protocols.

?Recommendations to medical staff for appropriate laboratory testing and/or prophylactic medications per programs protocol.

? Maintain equipment in proper working condition and exercise fiscal responsibility with department's resources

  • Under guidance of an appointed Forensic Healthcare & Violence Intervention Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) Preceptor learn to:

? Develop expertise and knowledge in performing medical forensic exams to include but not limited to forensic science, forensic best practices, trauma and related issues, legal case law and statutes, evidence collection procedures, and emerging trends

? Develop working knowledge of role responsibilities for law enforcement and medical investigative responsibilities to meet crime lab needs for processing evidence effectively.

? Develop expertise and knowledge to represent the medical forensic exam during courtroom testimony.

? Participates in professional development including department meetings, in-services, and county, state or national levels of peer review as determined by the SANE Program leadership.

  • Under guidance of an appointed Forensic Healthcare & Violence Intervention Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) Preceptor learn to:

? Understand professional role boundaries as a FNE separate from crime lab, law enforcement, advocacy, prosecution and defense

? Seek advice, collaboration, and support from department leadership team managing challenging clinical care situations.

? Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with TH staff and management, patients, families, physicians and outside agencies.

? Develop ability to interact with multidisciplinary teams, communicate program needs and work with peers to establish best outcomes for patients.

? Adjust positively to multiple demands, ambiguity, role shifting and change.

  • Commit and cover required number of shifts, holiday coverage and other scheduling requirements as determined by the Forensic Services Program policies.

  • Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interest with employment or patient care, including patient and medical record confidentiality.

  • Maintain all Human Resource requirements for continued employment in a timely manner, such as but not limited to, licensure, annual employee health assessment, annual MyTalent modules, RQI modules, and performance evaluations.
