Job Description

Under the supervision of the teacher, One-to-One Paraprofessional will provide direct service to individual students and participate in the daily instruction and activities of the school, program, and class to which the student is assigned. Beyond the normal classroom activities, the duties of a One-to-One Paraprofessional correspond directly to the needs of the student.

Students requiring a One-to-One Paraprofessional may have disabilities or diagnoses including pervasive developmental disorder, autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Williams' Syndrome, physical handicaps, multiple handicaps, blindness, deafness, Tourettes' Syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychiatric disorders (psychosis, schizophrenia, multiple personalities, depression), oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, conduct disorder, genetic disorders, and brain injury. They may also speak a language other than English.

Principal/Head of Schools/School-based Special Education Administrator

Responsibilities

  1. Work with small groups of children instructionally, assist with toileting, diapering, lifting and transfers, maintain personal hygiene, assist the school nurse with tube feedings, scribing, note-taking, and communication systems (e.g., ASL, SEE 2, Picture Exchange System, communication boards), Braille, Applied Behavioral Analysis, behavior management, redirection, de-escalation, and physical restraint.
  2. In some cases, be a specific gender due to the nature of the work (toileting) or the individual history of the student. This requirement helps protect both the student and the paraprofessional.
  3. Assist students who may be assigned to any district school, including examination schools, and who may participate in advanced coursework requiring additional support.
  4. Collaborate with the classroom teacher to implement activities as outlined in daily lesson plans.
  5. Foster open communication with parents and staff.
  6. Perform other related duties as requested by the Head of School, Principal, or Special Education Administrator, especially when the student is absent.

Qualifications - Required

  1. Education: High School Diploma or GED
  2. Forty-eight (48) college credit hours or an Associate's Degree, or a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment () or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants ().
  3. Experience working with students with mild to moderate disabilities as listed above.
  4. Experience working effectively with parents, guardians, administrators, teachers, and students.
  5. Ability to assist with team instruction.
  6. Flexibility to meet the needs of the student and family.
  7. Training in ABA.
  8. Current authorization to work in the United States.
  9. Other qualifications may vary based on the specific student needs.

Qualifications - Preferred

School hours vary, with some schools operating under the Schedule A Expanded Learning Time (ELT) agreement.
