Program Description

Felton Institute has been providing comprehensive early care and education services in San Francisco since 1971. Felton now has ECE programs in SF’s Mission, Bayview and Visitation Valley neighborhoods; and offers a school-readiness program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers (2 weeks to 6 years old). Felton’s ECE programs include nine (9) Infant / Toddler classrooms and ten (10) preschool classrooms, which serve approximately 350 children, full day/ year round. These multicultural, educational programs provide a nurturing, developmentally challenging, and inclusive environment for very young children of low/moderate income families. Brief Job Description

The Early Interventionist is expected to conduct assessments using a variety of different tools and provide individualized instruction and specialized intervention to children with a range of developmental disabilities, including children on the Autism spectrum, at the center and (occasionally) in the community. The Early Interventionist prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to assigned activities; assesses and monitors child progress using different data collection methods, ensures quality of intervention, maintains confidentiality of children, families, and staff involved in the program, attends and participates in meetings, trainings and conferences as assigned. The Early Interventionist must be familiar with and willing to learn a range of tools and intervention approaches specific to the field of Early Intervention (e.g. Early Start Denver Model; Assessment, Evaluation and Programming System; Activity-Based Intervention, Hanen Centre programs, Routines-based Intervention, ABA, DIR/Floortime, Kimochis), and how to implement them to fidelity in the natural environment. The Early Interventionist is expected to demonstrate a family-centered, culturally-sensitive and strengths-based approach in working with children with special needs and their families. 

 

The Early Interventionist will work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary Early Intervention team to coordinate and deliver services to young children (birth to 3) with special needs at the center and in family homes. While working with children at the center, intervention will be delivered in the inclusive classroom environment and the Early Interventionist will be expected to work collaboratively with Early Childhood Educators and other teaching staff in supporting the optimal growth and development of children with special needs in the classroom, with a heavy focus on coaching and capacity-building. When delivering intervention in the home, the Early Interventionist is expected to work collaboratively and in partnership with the child’s caregivers and family members to support the child’s growth and development at home, with a heavy focus on parent coaching and capacity-building.

 

Specific Responsibilities  

  • Performs individual observations, developmental assessments of children with identified special needs, or other children as assigned.
  • Provides Early Intervention services in a 1:2, 1:1 or in a group setting utilizing the evidenced-based practices of Felton’s EII program design. 
  • Making appropriate follow-up recommendations 
  • In collaboration with Early Intervention Supervisor assesses the need for consultations by specialists-SLP, OT, PT and Mental Health Services. 
  • Works on one-to-one basis with children to attain specific development goals which are specified in the Individual Activity Plan. 
  • Creates quarterly (3 month intervals) individual activity plans for GGRC/ MOLERA children with short term objectives and activities to relate in part to the Family Service Plan and the HELP or other assessment tools. 
  • Plans activities in conjunction with Teachers, Early Intervention Team and consultants/ therapists. Supports in monitoring treatment plans for children funded under special needs funding and other children as assigned. 
  • Observes and supports classroom teachers in implementation of individual/group activity plans for children with special needs, or other children as assigned. 
  • Provides input/changes/suggestions regarding curriculum adaptations in order to meet the individual needs of children to Classroom Teacher, Early Intervention Supervisor and Site Supervisor as needed. 
  • Provides support and assistance to classroom teaching staff regarding issues of individual children, e.g., (feeding procedures, feeding techniques and use of adaptive equipment etc…) 
  • Models are developing appropriate activities/practices, and teaching techniques with classroom staff. Promote positive self-esteem, self-image. 
  • Meets with parents individually and /or in conjunction with other members of the social services team/ to include teachers, coordinators, social workers, and therapist etc.... documents parent conferences; participates in- service plans. 
  • Participates in other special Parent Activities/ Trainings/ Workshops as needed (i.e. 
  • Writes initial, progress and exit reports for GGRC / MOLERA children (sixmonth intervals and at one-year intervals) and/or at renewal time for MOLERA funded children. 

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

  • B.A Degree in the Child Development, Mental Health, Special Education or related field.
  • Work experience: 3 years with children with special needs from birth to three years, and their families, using assessment, teaching and other professional skills related to this Position. 
  • Bilingual Spanish Skills-preferred 
  • Ability to work with and relate to a diverse staff and client population.
  • Knowledge of child development, special education, assessment and individual program development for children and for families. 
  • Ability to document program activity and submit appropriate statistics and program utilization to funding agents 
  • Must have excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to coordinate various levels of care for special needs children.
  • Must pass a Department of Justice fingerprint clearance and a Child Abuse Index clearance, Health Screening and TB Test as required by licensing. 
  • Ability to lift 25 – 40 pounds as needed every day; this includes children and equipment.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, sit on floor, lower and raise self from floor during classroom activities, and to use both hands to grasp securely on a consistent basis. Can move quickly in order to respond to an emergency situation. 
  • Ability to independently speak, understand, read and write English adequate to the needs of the job. 
  • Knowledge of low-income and homeless issues for children and families preferred.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the cultural background of the children and families being served. 
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word etc.

Salary Range: $29-$33 hourly (DOE)
